Floral Clutch Bag
Floral Clutch Bag
Today we are going to make a Floral Clutch Bag from soft imitation suede. The Clutch bag and flap is lined with thin batting. The inside of the bag has a fabric lining and the flap is lined with suede. The completed bag (closed) measures 12″ across and 7.5″ in height/30cm x 19cm
What You Will Need To Make Your Floral Clutch Bag.
Hoop for embroidery: 5″x7″/130mmx180mm
Marathon Threads as per Colour Chart
1 Piece of Suede measuring 15″x12″/38cmx30cm
1 Piece of Suede to fit Flap Pattern – this is the Lining
1 Piece of thin Batting to fit Flap Pattern
.75’wide Bias Binding x 55″ long/2cm wide x 140cm long
For the BAG:
2 Pieces of Suede measuring 17″x10″/43cmx26cm
2 Pieces of Fabric lining measuring as above
1 magnetic clasp
Fabric Temporary Adhesive Spray
Fabric Marker pencil – must be able to come out easily
Let’s Get Started
Print out the Pattern Pieces and the Pattern Layout Guide. Do not resize.
Bag Flap: Cut pages along borders and tape pieces together. Actual pattern size.
Bag: As above. Pattern pieces are now prepared. We’re going to embroider the Bag Flap first.
Using the Pencil Marker, find the centre of the Bag Flap Fabric. Hoop up.
Following the Colour Chart stitch out the embroidery design. Take the embroidery out of the hoop. Trim away the excess stabilizer around the embroidery.
Place the Flap pattern over the embroidery. The lowest point of the embroidery should be about 1.5cm/.5″ above the circle marker for the magnetic clip shown on the pattern.
I copied the Flap pattern onto Tracing Paper to see the placement of the embroidery – it cuts out the guesswork!
Cut out the Bag Flap.
Spray the batting lightly with Fabric Spray and press onto wrong side of flap.
Using a small zig-zag stitch, stitch the batting in place right round the outer edge.
Fit the magnetic clasp onto the suede lining.
Spray the batting with fabric spray and place the suede lining on top of the batting.
Stitch the Bias-binding around the flap. Fold to back side and hand stitch in place.
Now do the top the same way.
Stitch all the darts: Batting, Lining and Suede.
Attach the Batting to each suede bag piece and stitch right round to hold the batting in place.
Place the bag pieces on top of each other. Pin. Stitch seam width round the outer edge. NOT along the top.
Stitch the linings together on the sides as shown. NOT along the top.
Leave about a 6″/15cm opening along the bottom of the bag. Turn the lining right side out.
Fit the lining into the bag. The right side of the lining must face the suede.
Keeping the lining and suede edges even, pin the lining to the bag right round the opening. Stitch in place.
Pull the lining through.
Mark the placement for the magnetic clasp. Push a pin through to the right side.
Cut 2 tiny slits and place the magnet.
Fit the little disc and press the little “legs” of the magnet flat.
Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining. Fold in the raw edges of the opening and stitch closed by machine.
Push the lining to the inside. Pin the lining flat round the opening
Pin the flap in place. Check that the magnets line up correctly. Stitch in place using either a straight or a zig-zag stitch. I used a zig-zag and it looks very neat as well as decorative.
